1. Container Tracking
There are millions of containers to be tracked around the world. These containers could be transiting on ships, storing cargo, transporting cargo, or could be sitting empty waiting for the next job. In many cases, opportunity costs are incurred when empty containers has to be transported across the globe to meet the demand for containers in another location. Operators need visibility and timely updates on the location and statuses of the containers to understand how to optimise these assets.
How can we grasp the locations and statuses of millions of containers in real-time with cost effective and long-lasting trackers or solutions?
2. Ship Connectivity/
While digital data from ship can be used to optimize the fleet operation, there are challenges in collecting these digital data. Ships are made of steel compartments making it difficult for WiFi signals to travel through compartments. Sending signals back to shore is equally challenging. Retrofitting new sensors on vessels to send data to shore servers usually requires massive cabling work and is very expensive.
How can we improve data connectivity within the ship in a cost effective way?
3. HR Training Technology
Container shipping business is very operations-centric and require constant on-site training for both newly hired and rotated employees. With multiple types of vessels and containers boxes comes with different operational methods which the employees will have to learn on-the-job. Yet, it is challenging to train all related employees on-board due to practical restrictions on the ship.
How can we replicate the on-site training environment and deliver effective operational training to employees with modern technologies?
4. Smart Underwater Inspection
Underwater inspection is conducted in order to assess ship hull and propeller condition, mechanical damage and condition of paints etc. Underwater inspection by divers is informative but it is costly. Underwater inspection is also challenging as it has to be done quickly within the tight schedules of ship docking times, during day light hours and is subjected to divers’ availability.
How can we adopt technologies to monitor ship hull conditions with ease?
5. Smart Customer Contracting
Customer contracting is a long and complicated process requiring many forms and manual data entry. Long process and waiting time may affect customer satisfaction.
How can we simplify the customer contracting process without compromising on the customer’s needs? In addition, can we improve customer experience by maintaining flexibility during the discussion of shipping arrangements?
6. Documentation Efficiency
A bill of lading (BL) is a legal document issued by shipping companies based on the shipping instruction provided by shippers through various channels such as email, fax, website etc. Many shippers generally send shipping instructions by email or fax which requires a lot of manual data entry before BL can be issued. This manual data entry process runs the risk of human errors like mistyping etc.
How can we reduce or eliminate manual data entry process to make accurate data conversion from shipping instruction to BL?
7. Fuel Prices Analytics
Fuel prices fluctuate based on the events related to supply and demand of fuel. These fluctuations could greatly affect operation costs. Many shipping companies will try to analyse predominant patterns to manage fuel price fluctuations and keep initial costs low.
How can we predict fluctuating fuel prices by utilising cutting edge analytics?
